The interactive panels in this sensory garden were designed and created on site and then installed at a local kindergarten during a makeover day that involved students from 6 different HoL schools.
This former bike shed has been transformed over time into a beautiful and functional hut space. The enclosed, vine covered entrance has a timber seating area, paving and earth bag walls – projects all designed and completed by students.
The ‘Hut’ is an important place to foster a sense of connection and belonging among the team.

Focus Plans are the heart of the HoL methodology. They play a key role in the program’s structured reflective practice framework which has been designed specifically to support the social and emotional learning of students and monitor their development and progress helping build overall success at school.
Students learn to manage their emotions and social interactions, empowering them with a lifelong toolkit of strategies to make friends, cooperate, work in a team, understand and show empathy for others, establish and
maintain supportive relationships, make responsible decisions, and build resilience.
Each student will be given different Focus Plans throughout their time in the program. They are clearly displayed on the interior of the Hut and together as a group, students will share and discuss their achievement of their own Focus Plan. They are designed to be measurable during a HoL day and transferable to other school contexts such as the classroom and school yard.
A functional outdoor cooking and eating area is a valuable space within the precinct. Many schools build their own pizza oven or BBQ where meals can be prepared.
HoL fosters real and genuine parent engagement, with the outdoor eating space providing a different environment for parents and schools to join together to celebrate the learning and wellbeing outcomes of students. HoL celebration events are a great way for parents to engage positively, often attracting the support and participation of families that do not regularly visit the school.
The rendered earth bag seating is a wonderful addition to this beautiful space and creates another area where students can come together and create a sense of connection and inclusion.

The HoL ‘table’ is central to the program. A table provides a dedicated place for students and staff to come together, plan their day, share a meal, take part in discussions, and reflect on their achievements - all of which are vital elements for establishing and maintaining a positive team culture.
Students take pride and ownership over the space if they make their own table and chairs or use recycled seats from the school.
So many HoL projects feature reusing and repurposing secondhand materials - like the timber used to create these doors and the old bottle tops to make a fly deterrent.

At the heart of any home is the kitchen and students have created this space to enable meals to be prepared and shared as a team. Carpentry, tiling, and plumbing are amongst the skills learned during projects like this. Cupboards and splash backs have been changed over the years allowing new students to put their stamp on the design and functionality.

A unique quality of HoL is that it is delivered on the school grounds so students can remain on site as part of their school community. Some HoL precincts are situated closer to school buildings than others, however, many have a dedicated space for the sole use of HoL creating an oasis for the students to belong to and put their mark on.
Storage is an important way to ensure a site is safe from hazards and materials are kept in a suitable environment. Lockable cabinets, old bag boxes, shelving and reusing filing cabinets are ideas for storage in a workshop. Organised boxes for PPE gear make it easy for students to find and return to the right place.
Students use their talents to add a touch of their own personality to the precinct such as sculptures, totem poles and other creative art installations.
Even bugs find a HoL a special place to belong. Students construct ‘bug hotels’ which encourage good bugs to move into the garden.
Located conveniently at the entrance to the school, this shipping container was internally fitted out by the HoL students. It enables the school’s senior applied learning students to use the space as part of their program, access the community garden, and it also offers potential for a café space to provide food and refreshments for students, staff and parents.
A special ‘lean to’ addition to the workshop was created in honour of a valued volunteer and aptly named ‘Mick’s shed’. Mick dedicated his time and energy to support the students and staff over many years. The shed provides suitable storage for timber and equipment and the exterior wall was cleverly created using recycled plastic milk bottles.
Keeping tools organised with a shadow board is important. Students design and build their own so they can easily see when tools are missing and where tools should be returned to after use.

This workshop space was the original ‘Hut’ of the inaugural students at this school. With one large workbench, storage and small makeshift kitchen, the students created a place to belong and enabled the program to grow and develop with the creation of projects across the precinct. With the new ‘Hut’ completed over time, this workshop is now a spacious workspace featuring several benches and extensive tool and material storage.

Each HoL program prominently displays a ‘Game Plan’ poster outlining the ‘shape of the day’ for the students – providing important structure and dedicated time for planning, working on group projects, meal sharing, and reflective practice which are all important aspects of the day. Students spend the whole day together in the program with the exception being primary schools who may run a shorter day.
The HoL precinct is accessed from the front entrance of the school, tucked away from the main thoroughfare.

The former chicken enclosure has been upcycled into a gardening hothouse with easy access to the garden at the rear of the HoL hut.
Growing fruit and veggies at school enables HoL teams to use fresh produce in their program. Food technology and other school subjects also use the produce in their classes teaching students about paddock to plate.

The students established and care for a working garden for their school community featuring fruit trees and vegetable beds. Projects include garden edging, paths, a deck seating area, landscaping and garden maintenance.
